Protecting Your Investment During The Winter

The aroma of good cigars. There’s nothing like it! But how do you protect your cigars during the winter months when the air is dryer and the humidity is low? You see, if you don’t maintain a constant level of humidity, preferably around 60-70% relative humidity, the cigars will not be that great to smoke. Cigars are most enjoyable when they contain about 12-14% of their total weight in moisture.

If your cigars become damp, they won’t burn properly; it’ll be difficult to keep them lit; they’ll be difficult to draw on; the smoke may become dense; you could get a sour taste and rank odor; and the cigars may even split their wrappers. If they become too dry, they will burn too hot, the smoke will be hot, they’ll have an acrid taste, and the flavor and aroma will be diminished because the essential oils will evaporate.

So, with all of this said, here are a few tips to help you protect your cigars during the winter months.

Make sure your humidor is in a room that doesn’t get direct sunlight on the actual humidor and the room is slightly darkened and has a stable temperature below 75 degrees. If this isn’t possible, you can add a regular home humidifier to the room that the humidor’s stored in. This’ll add humidity to the room and therefore to the humidor.

You can put a shot glass or small dish filled with distilled water directly in the humidor towards the back after removing the cigars. You can add a few drops of vodka to the water to keep it from smelling moldy. Let the water filled dish or shot glass sit in the humidor for 48 hrs. Then remove and add back the cigars.

Another way to stabilize the humidity in the humidor is to season it. This can be done with a purchased bag of Boveda Seasoning. The bag comes pre-filled with the right amount of seasoning for different size humidors. First take out the cigars and place them in a plastic container with a lid, cooler or a Boveda Humidor Bag. Then place the Boveda Seasoning Bag directly into the humidor. Let it stay there for 24 hrs. Finally, take out the seasoning bag and put the cigars back in.

Choose one or more of these options and enjoy your cigars during this long winter season!
